SUMMARY
Base Camp on Maple sits at the base of the Winter Park ski resort on Maple Road, a location that places the project at the threshold between town and mountain, between arrival and ascent. The program is a duplex, two units across three stories, but the design ambition is anything but modest. The project was conceived as a mountain dwelling of genuine character, one that earns its place in a landscape that demands honesty of material and clarity of intent.
The material palette was assembled to engage the mountain context directly. Stone veneer grounds the base of each unit with permanence and weight, reading as an extension of the landscape rather than an imposition on it. Barnwood shiplap and cedar shiplap introduce the warmth and texture of worked wood across the upper volumes, materials that age gracefully in a mountain climate and deepen in character over time. Cedar timber framing marks the structural moments with precision, and the combination of charcoal shingle roofing and standing seam metal accents gives the rooflines a refined edge that keeps the design from settling into pastiche. Dark bronze windows frame views with warmth and restraint.
The section of each unit was organized to capture ski resort views at every level, with stair orientation and entry sequence designed to deliver that prospect progressively as residents move through the building. Wrap balconies at levels two and three extend the living space outward, bringing the landscape into the daily experience of the home. Each unit carries its own material identity within the shared palette, giving the duplex variety without fragmentation.
